Preparation

Remember the golden rule "DON'T PANIC". All technical matters are taken care of by someone else, known technically as SEP (Somebody Else's Problem!).

Enjoy it, the worse that can happen is that you don't connect - simple!

To prepare for the meeting you need to:

1) have speakers and a microphone - they are often built in to the computer, and

2) make sure that your speakers and microphone are turned on.

Note - if Tony is to see your image (optional) you will need a webcam - often built in to a computer or phone.

Different people will have different technical experiences so there are "How to" instructions below in case that assists. If you have any other questions or problems please send an email to lists@theopensecret.com

If you don't need specific help, then you don't need to read beyond this point.

Detailed instructions:

1 Check that you have speakers and a microphone:

* If you are using a phone, then this is automatic.

* If you listen to music on your computer then you have speakers.

* If you have "Skyped" using your computer then you have both.

* If you are using a computer with Windows 10, then right-click on the Speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Select Playback devices and you will be shown what output speakers are installed. Repeat for Recording devices and you can see what input devices exist.

* For older versions of Windows, you will need to use Control Panel > Device Manager.

* If you have unanswered questions then please email lists@theopensecret.com

2 Make sure that your speakers and a microphone are turned on:

As above, if you are using a computer with Windows 10:

For speakers - right-click on the Speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Select Playback devices, click on Sounds and in that selection click Asterisk > Test. You should hear a mechanical ping. If not, then right-click on each of the devices in the Playback section and select Enable.

For Microphones - right-click on the Speaker icon [spkricon] in the bottom right hand corner. Select Recording devices and you will see what is connected. Click your fingers (or sing) over the keyboard. You should get at least one green bar in the group of grey bars next to the device. If not, then right-click on each device shown and select Enable.

* For older versions of Windows, you will need to use Control Panel > Device Manager.

* If you have unanswered questions then please email lists@theopensecret.com

3 Buy headphones and a microphone (cheap but very good):

External headphones/speakers and microphone improve the overall audio experience. Almost anything will work - we used the LX-3000 from Amazon - £18.71

4 Check whether you have a webcam:

If you have Windows 10 on a PC then type Device Manager into the box to the right of the start button. Click on that, then double-click on Imaging Devices and if you have a webcam it will be listed below.

* If you have an earlier version of windows then find Device Manager and continue as above.

* If you have unanswered questions then please email lists@theopensecret.com

5 Make sure that your webcam is turned on:

If you have Windows 10 on a PC then

If you click Start > Settings > Privacy > Camera > and turn on "Let apps use my camera" the camera will be enabled. Clicking Start > All apps > Camera will then show you the view through your camera.

* If you have unanswered questions then please email lists@theopensecret.com

6 Buy a webcam (not necessary):

If you don't have a camera on your computer and want to use one, then almost anything will do. The TeckNet C016 USB HD 720P Webcam from Amazon at £10.99 looks good.
